Torres was born on the Federation colony Kessik IV, where she lived with her human father, John Torres, and her Klingon
mother, Miral. She inherited the characteristic Klingon forehead and bad attitude and she is often
struggling to control her Klingon temper.
Her mother tried to teach her the ways of the Klingon, B'Elanna was even
briefly made to study in a Klingon monastery, but she rebelled against her mother's Klingon beliefs.
As a child, a boy at her school called her "Miss Turtlehead", which made her extremely angry, so she
attacked him during recess, on the gyro-swing. She disengaged the centrifugal governor, which made him spin so fast,
he almost flew apart. Then she yanked him off the swing and started pounding his face until their teacher stopped her.
Her father left her mother and moved back to earth when Torres was five and B'Elanna cried herself to sleep every night
for months. She blamed her mother for breaking up the family
as she believed that her mother's Klingon ways was responsible for pushing her father away.
B'Elanna and Miral faught a lot and they finally stopped talking to each other and Miral moved back to the Klingon home world.
Torres joined Starfleet Academy, engineering specialty, in 2359. She was subject to four disciplinary hearings and one
suspension during her time at the academy and she dropped out during her second year. Academy Professor P. Chapman
recommended B'Elanna for re-admission if she ever wished to return to complete her training.
She joined the Maquis raider commanded by Chakotay in 2370 and served as chief engineer. When the Maquis raider and USS
Voyager were lost in the Delta Quadrant, and the crews were merged in 2371, she was granted a field promotion to Lieutenant,
junior grade.
Chakotay recommended her as chief enginner after the original chief engineer died during the transport to Delta Quadrant.
Janeway was sceptical at first but was convinced of Torres' capabilities after she figured out how to get the ship out of
the event horizon of a quantum singularity in 2371.
Torres is intelligent and is highly skilled in engineering. She has played both hoverball and Parrises Squares and was a
member of the decathlon team at the academy.
Torres married Tom Paris in 2377, after spending years of pushing him away, and they have a daughter together. B'Elanna's
experience on the Barge of the Dead as well as
other events in the Delta Quadrant made her see her mother in a more benign way. She and Tom named their daughter Miral
after her mother. Click here to go to Torres downloads.
