Chakotay is a Native American from a tribe settled on a planet in the Demilitarized Zone and he still follows many of his
tribe's traditions. He is interested in anthropology and archeology but he also likes sports such as boxing and martial arts. His Native American origin allows him to go on vision quests, talk to his
animal guide and to lucid dream among other things. He joined Starfleet Academy at the early age of 15 after being sponsored by Captain Sulu.
He completed Starfleet Academy and advanced to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on the U.S.S. Merrimac.
When his father died while protecting their settlement from the Cardassians, Chakotay decided to leave Starfleet and join
the Maquis. He believed, as many others in the Demilitarized Zone, that the Federation couldn't protect them from Cardassian
cruelty.
He became a captain of a Maquis ship and was the commanding officer of B'Elanna Torres,
Lon Suder, Kurt Bendera, Kenneth Dalby, Mariah Henley, Ensign Ayala, Lt Hogan, Seska, Gerron, Jarvin and Chell among others.
This ship was pulled together with USS Voyager into the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker's array. When Janeway's original
commander was killed during the transport to Delta quadrant he was replaced by Chakotay and he as well as his Maquis crew
